Bank account not syncing

A checklist of the most common reasons an account stops syncing, and how to fix each one.

New accounts start syncing automatically once you've set up the connection, so you don't need to link them to a destination first. If an account still isn't syncing, check its health and then go through the causes below.

Check the account's health

Go to Banks in the sidebar, open the account and select the About tab. Under Sync activity you'll find:

  • The account's health: Healthy, Failing (recent syncs failed) or Dead (10 or more failed syncs in a row).

  • Auto sync, which shows whether the account syncs on a schedule.

  • When transactions and balances were last synced.

  • If the account isn't healthy: the Integrator message (the error returned by your bank or our data provider), the number of Failed attempts, and the time of the last attempt (Last attempt at).

Common causes and how to fix them

Most banks only give Synci access for a limited time, and a connection can also stop working on the bank's side. Go to Banks in the sidebar: a connection that has expired, is about to expire or needs attention shows a notice and a Reconnect or Renew consent button. Click it and log in to your bank again. An account that has lost access shows Disabled, with a Renew consent button on its page.

The connection was disabled after a plan change

If you downgraded your plan or your subscription ended, Synci disables connections above your plan's limit. A disabled connection shows a notice saying it has been disabled, and an Enable button. Click Enable to turn it back on. If you're already at your plan's limit, Synci asks you to upgrade instead.

You haven't finished setting up the connection

After you connect a bank, Synci walks you through a short setup: Accounts, Preferences, Transaction preview and Destinations. The first sync starts once you've confirmed your accounts and preferences. If you leave the setup before that, Synci finishes it for you after about 30 minutes, keeping the accounts you selected, and the first sync starts then.

The account wasn't included during setup

Accounts you untick in the Accounts step are marked Not included. Synci keeps them, but they're disabled and never sync. To add one later, open the account under Banks and click Renew consent. You can also do this from the connection's page (open the three-dot menu next to the bank and choose Manage). After you've logged in to your bank, Synci lists all your accounts again, and you can tick the ones you want.

Sync frequency is set to Never

Open the account's Settings tab and check Sync frequency under Sync. If it's set to Never, the account only syncs when you start a sync yourself, and the About tab shows Auto sync as Disabled.

The sync start date is in the future

The Sync start date in the same Sync settings means only transactions that have occurred since that date are synced. If it's set to a date in the future, no transactions come in until then. Pick an earlier date.

Your bank limits how often Synci can fetch data

Some banks only accept a limited number of requests a day. When a bank refuses a sync because of its daily limit, Synci doesn't mark the account as failing. Instead, it pauses that account for the rest of the day, and from then on syncs it less often: every 6 hours at first, and if the bank keeps refusing, less often again, down to once a day. You don't need to change your sync frequency for this.

Your bank or our data provider is having an outage

Temporary downtime at your bank or at our open banking provider GoCardless doesn't mark your account as failing right away. Synci pauses and tries again later. If the outage goes on for a long time, the account will eventually show as Failing. You can check out GoCardless' uptime here.

Brokerage and crypto accounts are about a day behind

Brokerage and crypto accounts sync once a day, and brokerages make new activity available with about a day's delay. Seeing yesterday's activity but not today's is expected for these accounts.

What if my bank account is healthy and still won't sync?

Some banks unfortunately don't work as well as others. While we have an excellent open banking provider, PSD2 itself (which most European open banking providers are built on) is far from perfect. Some banks work perfectly, some have weird quirks, and some just don't work, even though they're on the supported banks list. If this applies to you, please reach out to support and we'll escalate the issue to GoCardless.

If your bank is on our supported banks list and we're unable to fix the syncing problem in a timely manner, you're entitled to a full refund of your latest subscription payment, as described in our Refund Policy. If you want to wait for GoCardless to solve the issue, we are happy to extend your trial or subscription.
