Transaction Issues

Transaction amounts are reversed

Swap positive and negative amounts with a rule, either only on the way out or permanently in Synci.

Some banks report inflows as outflows, and outflows as inflows. Luckily, this can be easily mitigated by creating a rule that automatically swaps positive and negative transaction amounts.

When you create a rule for a bank account, Synci asks How the rule applies. Either option works for reversed amounts:

  • Only on the way out: shapes outgoing data for destinations, the API and webhooks. The transactions stored in Synci stay unchanged.

  • Change my data in Synci: permanently updates the transaction across Synci and everywhere it is sent.

Only on the way out (transfer rule)

A transfer rule swaps the amount as transactions are sent out. It will not apply the changes to the transactions stored in Synci.

  1. Go to Rules and click Create rule.

  2. Choose where the rule applies:

    • Linked accounts: pick the linked account. The swap only applies to transfers to that destination.

    • Bank accounts: pick the account, then select Only on the way out. This makes it an output rule, which applies to everything the account sends out: its destinations, the API and webhooks.

  3. Give the rule a name and click Create rule.

  4. In the Builder tab, don't add any conditions. A rule without conditions runs on every transaction.

  5. Click Add Action and set:

    1. Field = Amount (listed under Works with all destinations)

    2. Value = {{ transaction.amount | times: -1 }} (see Entering the value below)

  6. Click Save changes.

The rule is attached to the account you picked. To use it on more accounts, click Attach on the rule's page.

Change my data in Synci (bank account rule)

A bank account rule swaps the amount as transactions are fetched from the bank. It will apply the changes to the transactions stored in Synci, and will also be applied to any future transfers.

  1. Go to Rules and click Create rule.

  2. Choose Bank accounts, pick the account, then select Change my data in Synci.

  3. Give the rule a name and click Create rule.

  4. In the Builder tab, don't add any conditions.

  5. Click Add Action and set:

    1. Field = Amount (listed under Raw transaction fields)

    2. Value = {{ transaction.amount | times: -1 }}

  6. Click Save changes.

Turning this rule off later won't undo changes it has already made.

Entering the value

In the action's Value field, click Insert variable (or type {) and pick Amount. Choose Insert variable with modifier, select Multiply by, enter -1 and click Insert. You can also click Free-text and type {{ transaction.amount | times: -1 }} directly.

If you set this up with an older version of this guide, note that the value {amount*-1} no longer works. Synci only calculates values written inside {{ }}, so that value would be saved as plain text. Replace it with the value above.
