Transaction Issues

Transaction amounts are in the wrong currency

How to convert amounts your bank reports in the original currency, using a rule and the exchange rate on the transaction.

If you have made or received a payment in a currency that is different from your bank account currency, some banks may report the original currency amount as the actual amount. If this is happening to you, please contact support. We are happy to customize our integration with the bank to accommodate for discrepancies like these, free of charge.

If you would like to resolve this yourself, you can create a rule that converts the amount using the exchange rate your bank reports with the transaction:

  1. Go to Rules and click Create rule.

  2. Choose Bank accounts and pick the account. Under How the rule applies, select Change my data in Synci. Give the rule a name and click Create rule.

  3. In the Builder tab, click Add Condition and set:

    • Field: Currency Exchange Rate

    • Operator: Does not equal

    • Value: leave it empty

    This makes the rule run only on transactions that have an exchange rate. A rule without conditions runs on every transaction.

  4. Click Add Action and set:

    • Field: Amount (listed under Raw transaction fields)

    • Value: click Free-text and enter {{ transaction.amount | times: transaction.currency_exchange.exchange_rate }}

  5. Click Save changes.

To try the rule on real transactions before relying on it, click Test on the rule's page (see Output rules and testing rules).

The rule converts new transactions as they're fetched from your bank, and the change is permanent: turning the rule off later won't undo changes it has already made.

If you set this up with an older version of this guide, note that a value like {amount*currency_exchange.exchange_rate} no longer works. Synci only calculates values written inside {{ }}, so that value would be saved as plain text. Replace it with the expression above.
