Google Sheets

Guide for connecting Google Sheets to Synci. With Google Sheets, Synci mirrors your transactions and balances straight into a spreadsheet you own and control.

Connecting your Google account

  1. In Synci, open Google Sheets under Integrations in the sidebar. It's pinned there by default, and you can always find it on the All integrations page. Click New connection.

  2. In the Connect to Google Sheets dialog, click Connect. You'll be taken to Google to sign in and approve access. On Google's permission screen, keep the Google Drive box ticked.

  3. After approving, you're returned to your new connection in Synci, and the Add a spreadsheet dialog opens.

✅ Synci uses Google's restricted file-access permission, so it can only see the spreadsheets it creates for you or the ones you specifically choose, never the rest of your Drive.

Adding a spreadsheet

Once your account is connected, add the spreadsheet your data should go into. The dialog opens on its own right after you connect, and you can open it again any time with Add spreadsheet on the connection's page. Give it an optional name, then choose:

  • Create new spreadsheet: Synci creates one in your Google Drive, ready to go.

  • Choose existing spreadsheet: click Browse with Google to pick one from your Drive, or paste its link or ID and click Attach spreadsheet.

You can add more than one spreadsheet, and even link the same accounts to several of them.

Synci writes to up to three tabs in each spreadsheet:

  • Transactions: your synced transactions.

  • Live Balance: a current balance for each linked account.

  • Balance History: a dated record of balances over time, great for charts.

A new spreadsheet gets all three tabs right away. In an existing spreadsheet, Synci creates the tabs a link needs when you link an account to it (named Synci Transactions, Synci Live Balance and Synci Balance History), unless you've already assigned tabs yourself.

The balance tabs only fill up for accounts linked as Transactions & balance or Balance only. Bank accounts are linked as Transactions only by default, so change the link's mode if you want their balances in the sheet.

To choose which tab receives what, open the spreadsheet in Synci and go to Settings > Tabs. Pick the Transactions tab, Live Balance tab and Balance History tab, or click Create tab to add a new one.

Choosing your columns

For the Transactions tab, you decide which fields become columns. Open the spreadsheet in Synci and go to Settings > Columns.

  • Transaction ID is always pinned in column A. Synci uses it to find rows and prevent duplicates.

  • The default columns after it are Account ID, Account name, Date, Payee, Description, Amount, Currency and Booked.

  • You can add almost anything Synci knows about a transaction: account details, IBANs, remittance info, merchant category codes, FX rates, and more (the same fields you use when building Rules).

  • Columns are configured per spreadsheet, and you can change them anytime. When you save a new layout, Synci rewrites the Transactions tab to match: rows for transactions Synci still holds are rebuilt from its data, and leftover columns from the old layout are cleared. Rows Synci can't match to a transaction, such as rows you added yourself, keep their values.

Linking a financial account

Nothing syncs until you link an account to a spreadsheet.

  1. Open the spreadsheet in Synci and go to its Linked Accounts tab, or start from the account's own Linked Accounts tab: Linked accounts: Send data to destinations

  2. Choose what the link sends: Transactions only, Transactions & balance or Balance only. Bank accounts default to Transactions only; brokerage and crypto accounts default to Transactions & balance.

  3. Transactions start flowing in, respecting the link's transfer start date, its mode, and any rules. Exactly like other destinations.

  4. Want to tweak what gets written? Create an Only on the way out rule and attach it to the linked account to customize the output for that link: Creating rules

How syncing works

  • New transactions are added to the bottom of the Transactions tab in date order. Prefer newest-first? Just sort the sheet.

  • When a pending transaction clears, Synci updates that row in place. It finds the right row by its Transaction ID, and refreshes the columns covered by the link's When transactions become booked settings (status, payee, description and amount).

  • Amounts are written as real numbers, with dates in their own column, so =SUM(), pivot tables, and charts work without any cleanup.

  • For links that send balances, Synci keeps the Live Balance tab current (one row per account) and adds to Balance History over time, once a day.

Editing your sheet safely

The spreadsheet is yours. Add your own tabs, columns, formulas, and formatting freely. A few things keep syncing working smoothly:

  • Don't delete the Transaction ID column (column A) or its values. Synci uses it to update rows and prevent duplicates; without it, it can't find the right row to update.

  • Don't rename or delete the tabs Synci writes to. Synci remembers each tab by name, so a tab you rename in Google stops syncing until you assign it again in Settings > Tabs.

  • Your own extra columns and tabs are left untouched during normal syncs.

Tip: If you change your column selection in Synci, the Transactions tab is rewritten across its full width, so extra columns you added to that tab are cleared. Keep anything custom on a separate tab if you want it preserved across changes.

Your privacy

Synci only ever accesses the spreadsheets it creates for you or the ones you explicitly pick. It cannot see anything else in your Google Drive.

FAQ

Can I sync to more than one spreadsheet? Yes. Add as many spreadsheets as you like and link different accounts to each.

Can I use a spreadsheet I already have? Yes. When adding a spreadsheet, click Choose existing spreadsheet, then browse your Drive with Google or paste its link or ID. Synci adds its tabs to it.

Why are my balance tabs empty? Balances are only written for accounts linked as Transactions & balance or Balance only. Bank accounts are linked as Transactions only by default, so change the link's mode to start filling the balance tabs.

Will my edits and formulas survive a sync? Yes, as long as you keep the Transaction ID column and don't rename the synced tabs (or reassign them in Settings if you do). Changing your column selection rewrites the Transactions tab, so put custom work on your own tab.

The newest transactions are at the bottom, can I flip that? Transactions are added oldest-first so your existing rows stay stable. Sort by the date column if you'd rather see the newest first.

If I disconnect the sheet, is my data deleted from Google? No. Removing the connection or spreadsheet in Synci just stops syncing. The spreadsheet itself stays safely in your Google Drive.
