Adding accounts
A step-by-step guide to connecting your bank, brokerage, or crypto-exchange accounts to Synci.

Formerly "Adding bank accounts": Synci now supports brokerages and crypto exchanges in addition to banks. The connection flow is the same for all three; any differences are called out below.
Adding accounts to Synci is done by creating a financial connection to the institution that holds them. Once the connection is authorized, Synci automatically retrieves all accounts you've granted access to. To learn more about connections themselves, see the Financial connections article.
To connect a real bank, brokerage or crypto exchange, you need an active subscription or free trial. Demo banks are free: see Trying Synci with demo banks below.
1. Select an institution
In the sidebar under Sources, open the Banks, Brokerages, or Crypto page and click New connection. Then search for your institution. For banks, you can also pick your country to narrow the list.
2. Create the financial connection
After selecting an institution, review the connection in the dialog that appears. For banks, it shows whether the bank Supports pending transactions (or Might not support pending transactions) and whether it Supports card accounts (or Might not support card accounts). If a feature you need might not be supported, it's worth testing the connection anyway; actual functionality often exceeds the initial indication.
The dialog also shows which provider powers the connection, for example Powered by GoCardless, with links to that provider's Terms and Privacy policy.
If you're connecting an EU or UK bank, you can customize the consent before proceeding under Connection settings:
Sync balances: whether Synci fetches your account balances. On by default.
Max history: how many days of transaction history Synci may access. Defaults to 90 days, or the bank's maximum if that is lower.
Access valid for: how many days Synci can access your data before you need to renew your consent. Defaults to the longest period your bank allows.
These settings are part of the consent agreement and can't be changed afterwards without renewing it, so it's worth a quick review here. New Zealand banks, brokerages, crypto exchanges and demo banks don't have a time-limited consent, so there are no connection settings for them.
3. Log in at your institution
Click Connect, and Synci redirects you to our data provider for that institution: GoCardless for banks in Europe and the UK, Akahu for banks in New Zealand, or SnapTrade for brokerages and crypto exchanges. There you review and grant the requested permissions, then authenticate directly with your institution, using whatever login method it requires (for example username and password, BankID, or your national ID number).
Synci never sees your login credentials. Authentication always happens at your institution, its official identity provider, or our data provider, and the access Synci receives is strictly read-only. Demo banks are hosted by Synci itself, so nothing you enter there leaves Synci.
4. Set up your accounts
Once you've authorized the connection, you're returned to Synci, which immediately begins fetching your available accounts. A short setup then walks you through four steps:
Accounts: choose which accounts to sync with Synci. Every account is included by default. Untick any you don't want: it's marked Not included and stays disabled, so nothing is fetched for it.
Preferences: give each account a familiar name, choose how far back to import transactions with Import from, and decide whether to turn on Enrichment for cleaner payee names (bank accounts on the Pro plan).
Transaction preview: see how your transactions will look, and customize which bank fields Synci uses for the payee, description and date. This step only appears for bank accounts.
Destinations: link your accounts to your favorite tools, or come back to this later.
You can change all of these later from the account's settings. If you leave the setup early, the remaining accounts keep their default settings and start fetching transactions.
For brokerage and crypto connections, Synci also fetches your holdings and account activity. Note that most brokerages deliver activity data with roughly a one-day delay, so it may take up to a day before all activity appears.
The usual next step is linking your accounts to a destination: see Linking accounts to destinations.
Trying Synci with demo banks
Synci's demo banks behave like real banks, but every account, balance and transaction they create is generated, and nothing you enter leaves Synci. To add one, click New connection on the Banks page and choose Demo banks in the country list.
One demo bank connects normally. The others fail on purpose (one refuses credentials, one behaves like a bank outage, and one has a consent that expires in 2 days), so you can see how Synci handles problems before they happen for real.
Demo banks are free and don't count toward your plan's connection limit. You can have up to four demo connections at a time.
Troubleshooting
An account is missing: Some institutions only expose accounts you explicitly selected during authorization. Renew the connection (Renew consent, or Reconnect if the consent has expired or the connection has failed) and make sure all accounts are selected. When you return, Synci asks which accounts to keep syncing, including any new ones.
An account you unticked during setup: It stays disabled until you include it again. Renew the connection and tick it when Synci asks which accounts to keep syncing.
The connection failed during setup: Try again; temporary outages at institutions are common. If it keeps failing, the error message shown on the connection page usually explains why.
Your institution isn't listed: See the Supported institutions article, or contact us to ask about adding it.
