Moving from the old to new version of Synci

Everything you need to know as an existing Synci customer

Updated over 2 months ago

While the new version of Synci is a complete rewrite, it shares a lot of similarities with the old version. Users who are familiar with Synci should be able to start using the new version with minimal guidance, however there are some fundamental changes that you should be aware of.

Sources are now just bank accounts

In the old version of Synci, every new bank account set up in Synci is called a "source". While technically correct, we felt it was unnecessarily obtuse. Which is why bank accounts are now just bank accounts.

Bank Connections

When you authenticate with your bank, a "bank connection" is created. The bank connection represents the consent you have given Synci to access your banking data. While bank connections have always been a thing, they were sort of hidden in the old version of Synci. In the new version, the hierarchy of your banking data becomes more clear:

  • Bank Connection

    • Bank Accounts

      • Transactions

      • Balances

Transfer Links

Previously, to transfer transactions from your bank accounts to your budget accounts, you would have to connect the source to a budget. Now, you have to create a transfer link. A transfer link is basically just a link between a bank account and a destination like a YNAB budget account. The reason we've made this change, is to let users connect the same bank account to multiple destinations, without having to create multiple bank connections. It's no longer a 1-to-1 relationship between bank accounts and destinations, but a 1-to-"as many as you'd like" relationship. There is no limit on the number of transfer links you can create.

Rules

The new version of Synci offers a brand new rule engine, which lets you define rules that automatically manipulate or handle transactions in whatever way you see fit. You can create rules for bank accounts, transfer links or YNAB budget accounts. Some settings that were previously available in the old version of Synci have been removed, as you now can just create rules to replicate the same functionality. As you switch to the new version, we will automatically create rules to replicate your settings from the old version.

Bank account rules

Bank account rules are applied to transactions as they are fetched from attached bank accounts. Transaction changes are saved in Synci, and will also be applied anywhere the transaction is transferred to.

Transfer link rules

Transfer link rules are applied to transactions as they are transferred to attached transfer link destinations. Transaction changes are only saved in the destinations they have been transferred to.

YNAB rules

YNAB rules are automatically applied to new transactions created in attached YNAB budget accounts. Transaction changes are only saved in YNAB.
